The Technology Behind the Solution

The VentriPoint Diagnostic System is based on patented technology used to create anatomically accurate reconstructions and corresponding measurements of the right and left ventricles of the heart. Under an exclusive license from the University of Washington, the methods employed by the VentriPoint Diagnostic System require only a sparse amount of anatomical input data to enable the automated knowledge based reconstruction in 30 seconds or less.  The licensed technology includes a method to reconstruct the surface of an object using three dimensional imaging data, known as the piecewise smooth subdivision surface reconstruction method. It also contains software and proprietary knowledge to create three dimensional imaging data from a standard two dimensional imaging machine.  This method, known as Knowledge Based Reconstruction, is the basis for VentriPoint’s initial planned commercial service application.  Multiple peer reviewed papers have been published in support of the accuracy of these methods.

Using key anatomical points identified by the clinician, the VentriPoint software generates a three dimensional surface model by referencing the databases embodying knowledge of similar heart shapes for the specific disease state application. Applying knowledge weighting, interpolation and scaling, this Knowledge Based Reconstruction method supplies an accurate three dimensional model with volume and ejection fraction measurements.

The knowledge databases are a key feature to the speed and ease of use of the VentriPoint Diagnostic System. Accurate volumetric and ejection fraction results are generated without requiring additional sonographer training and with less than five minutes of additional time for data transfer and analysis.

VentriPoint’s Diagnostic System – Key Benefits

  • Equips medical professionals with accurate ventricular volume and shape data that is crucial in the clinical decisions concerning the timing of surgery and other therapeutic interventions in a patient with CHD.
  • Produces accurate results in less time (by a factor of at least 20x) than other conventional methods.
  • Works in conjunction with lower cost 2-D Echocardiography (Ultrasound) equipment which is readily accessible in medical facilities of all sizes.
  • Provides a lower cost solution to existing data acquisition modalities (e.g. Magnetic Resonance Imaging [MRI]).
  • After the selection of key data points, analysis and ventricular volume calculation is automated via internet portal, providing 24/7 service worldwide.

Competitive Position

The VentriPoint approach is based on patented technology for the anatomically accurate reconstruction of the Right and Left Ventricles of the heart. Although many methods exist for 3-D surface reconstruction of the heart, only the piecewise smooth subdivision surface method permits knowledge based reconstruction from such sparse input, by virtue of its ability to recognize the anatomical origin of each traced point. Furthermore, the knowledge database of more than 200 3-D reconstructions of CHD patients’ Right Ventricles is expensive to reproduce. Finally, knowledge based reconstruction is a little known approach that has only been reported by two other sites in the world. The combined advantages of VentriPoint’s technology pose formidable barriers to competition.

Future Applications

Monitoring Congenital Heart Disease is only the first application of the VentriPoint Diagnostic System. Future updates to the VentriPoint Knowledge Database will enable diagnostic analysis of Pulmonary Hypertension (addressing the needs of 250,000 U.S. patients per year), Heart Failure (1.2M patients per year), and Coronary Artery Disease (1M patients per year). These numbers double when the international needs are taken into consideration.
